VIDEO: Kevin Smith & Harley Quinn Talk Compassion & Going All The Way

Filmmaker Kevin Smith and his actress daughter, Harley Quinn Smith discuss her decision to go vegan over a meal at Doomie’s Home Cookin’ in LA. The father-daughter duo have an open and honest conversation about the stigma of vegan food, what we were taught growing up about eating animals and why Harley wanted to “go all the way” for them The video is part of Farm Sanctuary’s Compassionate Meals series, which encourages people to take a friend out for a compassionate meal and engage in conversation about what compassion is.

Instead of taking a bullying approach that so many animal activists resort to, the Compassionate Meals series opens the conversation between vegans and nonvegans to talk about our beliefs and the welfare of animals.

Portia de Rossi “Adopts” a Turkey

image001Says de Rossi: “Turkeys are just as smart, loving, and full of feeling as my dogs.”

This Thanksgiving, Portia de Rossi is on a mission to change the way you think about turkeys.  Last week, Farm Sanctuary, America’s leading farm animal rescue and protection organization, announced that de Rossi is the official 2015 spokesperson for their annual Adopt a Turkey Project, which encourages people to help turkeys at Thanksgiving by “adopting” one of the rescued birds who live at their sanctuaries in New York and California.

For a one-time $30 donation, people can help provide care for a turkey, as well as educate the public about these emotionally complex birds and protect them from the callousness of industrial farming. Sponsors receive a certificate with a color photo and fun details about their new friend.

Says de Rossi, “I’m excited to be adopting a turkey for Farm Sanctuary. Contrary to what most people believe, turkeys are just as smart, loving, and full of feeling as my dogs. I’m happy to join people who want to make a positive difference for these animals. Making a one-time donation to sponsor a rescued turkey is a fun and easy way to help.”

Martha Stewart’s Plea To Save NJ’s Pigs

Martha Stewart is the latest celebrity to stand up for New Jersey’s pigs. In a letter delivered last week to the office of Governor Chris Christie, Stewart urges the governor to sign a bipartisan state animal welfare bill that will ban keeping mother pigs in crates so small they can’t even turn around.

Stewart’s letter comes on the heels of fellow New Jersey native Bill Maher’s op-ed in the New York Times, in which he accused the governor, who’s mulling a 2016 presidential campaign, of pandering to voters in Iowa, which holds the nation’s first presidential caucus.

“There must be more to it,” Maher wrote, referring to Christie’s veto of a similar bill last year. “Could it be that a possible presidential candidate is aware that Iowa is the No. 1 pig state in the country, and that Republican primary voters there are strongly anti-regulation?”

In her letter, Stewart writes, “All animals need to turn around; they were designed that way. But pigs, especially, are interesting individuals with unique personalities and complex behavior and cognition. It is no more acceptable to cram pigs into tiny crates than it would be to do the same thing to dogs.”

The bill just overwhelmingly passed the Senate and Assembly, and will follow similar bills in nine states, including California, Arizona, Florida, and others. It has the support of the Humane Society of the United States, ASCPA, Farm Sanctuary, and 93 percent of New Jersey voters—including 94 percent of Democrats and 92 percent of Republicans.

Stewart and Maher have both spoken out publically to end farm animal cruelty in the past, and were recruited to help by Farm Sanctuary, America’s leading farm animal protection and rescue organization.
